My first thought when I saw this post was whether the Adcom googles the candidates. I've noticed my webpage getting a lot more hits recently!

Yeah, I think they have the ability.

If I was on the adcomm and received an 800 GMAT from Pearson, and I had some free time, I would peek at the guy's application.

Hahaha.
Well, it is not something completely impossible, is it?

No. I think Rhyme is an undercover adcom

I don't really think they're so eager to start plowing through gazillion applicants that they just can't wait and peek into your stuff. :)

I've interviewed about 20-30 candidates in the past year for the firm I work for. Each time, I do a 10 second google/linkedin search for the person I'm interviewing. It gives me a brief picture of the candidate that the resume does not.

I wonder if adcoms do this for the candidates they are considering seriously.

That's the other thing :) It's quite probable they do some research on interesting candidates; the point of this thread is whether they peek into your app *before* you even applied.

I recall MIT or Stanford asked on the app. website whether you wanted to make your profile "viewable" to them or not prior to submission. I always wondered what they might be doing about this.

Cheers. L.

I wish they reviewed websites like these and identified the 'socially' active members!

It would be a good way to identify candidates with superior networking and social skills in the 'Electronic Age'!

I can confirm that Admissions Officers can indeed view your Embark application before submitting. I exchanged an email with an Admissions Director and this was part of the response....

"A quick check of Embark shows that you're halfway through the application..."

  Anybody else ever receive a message like this before?

I have also noticed that certain schools that I have open applications with have been sending A LOT of online literature, invites to alumni events, etc.

I can't help but think that it must be a marketing strategy. XYZ charges $175 p/app *2000 applications = two staff salaries and a nice bonus for the dean.

I should note that the admissions officer only checked my Embark application after I sent a question regarding application deadlines and interviews. So don't think they were just sitting around trolling for folks who haven't completed applications yet! ;-)

this is the email I got from one of the universities I applied for. Just FYI, I hadn't requested any info before the email.

Dear mary,

Periodically I receive reports of applications to our graduate program that have not been completed.

While I realize that you may just be waiting to finish applying, or may have decided not to proceed, I wanted to offer my assistance if there are any questions I might answer for you about our graduate programs.

while I realize that you may just be working on your app, I just wanted to say COME ON MAN, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!
