Can an MBA save me? Is there a shot at a decent school? [#permalink] New post 10 Oct 2013, 13:56
Hey guys. My current situation is pretty shitty and I'm wondering if you think an MBA could potentially lead to some kind of career. I just turned 25 (today actually) and am currently working at a bookstore making $8 an hour with about 10 hours a week (just started 2 weeks ago). I graduated from the top school in my state with a 3.5 in the end of 2010 and went to law school. I went to a top 30 school and did pretty well, around top 10-15%, but I struck out at OCI and took a leave of absence. Since then I've been trying to find some feasible option. I did get one decent job for 6 months for a software company in WI, but I couldn't really take working in WI. The winters were just too harsh, I wasn't meeting anyone, and there wasn't much advancement opportunity. So now I'm back in my home state, just working a part time job and trying to do some freelance work on the side, I might start game or web dev.

I'm not picky, I can't really say what I "want to do" since at this stage it's pretty much a matter of finding anything at all. In a perfect world though I'd have something that involves interaction with people and more moving around since I have ADHD and don't do so well in front of a computer screen all day. I'm about to start studying for the GMAT and am confident I can do well since I'm good at standardized tests. I just don't know if my WE and iffy past will crush any hopes of landing something decent.

The current plan is to just go back to my state school to resume the JD with a joint MBA (it's ranked ~30-50 in both programs) and pray that's enough to impress a local employer.

Any thoughts on my plans? I'm getting pretty desperate and don't want to stick around this part time job too long and become officially branded a min-wager.

I think it is tough to get a break without a strong work experience record for both MBA and Employers after the MBA.
The degree is not as critical as your accomplishments and resume for a serious job. My concern is that it is a slipper slope (I can't find any work right now; let me get an MBA and that will give me a job). If you are having a hard time with a job now, probably will continue along the lines after you get an MBA since there is no lack of MBA candidates and getting a job is a challenge for many qualified candidates.

My suggestion would be to look and get a job RIGHT NOW and then go for an MBA in a year or two.

Know the feeling. I got stuck in dead end jobs after my undergrad. Things really did turn around after I done a masters, so I do think that an option you should consider.

Before going back to grad study its useful to consider why you struck out at OC stage of your law course. Will help you stop repeating same mistakes.

I would a masters in some thing your interested in. Would find out which careers are less office/ computer based to help you find a good long term fit.

One option is a masters in management. This course assumes you have limited work experience but often covers the same info as an MBA and taught by the same faculty members.
I would hold off on a MBA.
