Can FAFSA hurt my standing? [#permalink] New post 12 Feb 2014, 13:42
Quick question. I accepted an offer at an elite school that I would love to matriculate at, and it looks like that's where I'll be going in the fall. I applied early action, but I also applied to round 2 for a number of other schools. I had to accept my offer at the first school because the acceptance deadline was before I'll hear back from the others.

Now, I'm filling out my FAFSA. The FAFSA asks me to list a number of schools. Will the school that I have been accepted to see my FAFSA? After all, they (the school) has a FAFSA submission due date posted on its website. I'm concerned they might see my FAFSA, see the other schools, and then realize that I might back out if Stanford somehow accepted me.

Is this something I need to worry about?

Great question that has a short answer. Nope. Schools get the FAFSA information but don't actually do much with it for a while. For need based scholarship decisions, they'll look at it. For merit based, it doesn't factor in. And then they look at it again as the summer kicks off as they get financial aid all sorted out.

You have nothing to worry about and good luck! We have our fingers crossed for you for Stanford!
