Can scholarship money cover cost of living/books/housing? [#permalink]

Hi guys,

Have been trying to research this but can't find any concrete answers, so apologies if this is already on the boards somewhere!

Does anyone know if MBA scholarships, if they exceed the amount of tuition, can ever be applied to the cost of living/housing/books etc while in grad school? Tuition is high of course, but living costs might be another $20-30k at least on top of that. Obviously not having to pay for tuition would be amazing on it's own, but I'm applying for a lot of scholarships from different sources and I was wondering if I did somehow manage to exceed the tuition costs if that might help me cover non-academic costs during my two years at school. This is more to help me decide how many scholarship applications to send, rather than a strategy to get more money Thanks in advance for any feedback! At some schools scholarships (both school awarded and outside combined) cannot exceed the cost of tuition. In the case that you receive a school awarded scholarship and another outside scholarship that exceeds tuition costs then your school award will be reduced. Some schools offer a very limited number of full-tuition fellowships that include an additional stipend. Consideration for these awards will differ by school (i.e. requiring an additional application or not). The biggest factor in determining if outside scholarship money can be used for living expenses is if the money goes to the student or the university. Some scholarships are sent directly to the school while others go to the student. If the money goes to you then you typically can use it as needed to cover books, student fees, and living expenses, if needed. These awards are great for students who have a full-scholarship but are looking to offset the additional costs beyond tuition. Hope this helps. _________________ The Brain Dump - From Low GPA to Top MBA (Updated September 1, 2013) - A Few of My Favorite Things--> http://cheetarah1980.blogspot.com SVP Joined: 16 Nov 2010 Posts: 1673 Location: United States (IN) Concentration: Strategy, Technology Followers: 34 Kudos [?]: 492 [0], given: 36 Re: Can scholarship money cover cost of living/books/housing? Obviously, in big cities the cost of living is higher and it drains your financial resources a lot more. On the flip side, sometimes you don't have to invest for travelling to career fairs (usually organized in big cities) and you can save some Money there. _________________ Formula of Life -> Achievement/Potential = k * Happiness (where k is a constant) GMAT Club Premium Membership - big benefits and savings Current Student Joined: 04 Oct 2011 Posts: 433 Concentration: Finance GMAT 1: 700 Q44 V41 GMAT 2: 750 Q48 V46 GPA: 3.03 WE: Project Management (Military & Defense) Followers: 16 Kudos [?]: 115 [0], given: 150 Re: Can scholarship money cover cost of living/books/housing? Is this the way it is with all MBA programs? I, and a few friends, had scholarships that covered all living expenses in med school.

I can't speak for all MBA programs. I only attend one. I remember a bit of stuff from the other schools I got into, but I wouldn't extrapolate that to all schools. Some schools do have a few fellowships that offer full-tuition plus a 10-20K/year stipend. However, they aren't many so I wouldn't depend on one coming through for you. If it does, then that's a beautiful bonus.
