Career change from IT to Finance [#permalink] New post 03 Apr 2014, 10:22
Hello everyone,
My first post in this forum.

I'm planning to do MBA part-time in Finance.

I have 8 years of experience working as an IT analyst and looking for a change of career to Finance. How tough is it to make the transition? If I were to change to a Finance, do I have to start from entry level accountant position even after I get an MBA?? What other positions can I apply to? Anyone who has done this, please advise.

Cheers and thanks,
Another prospective GMATER.

It depends on individual and requirement of the hiring company. However, since you have no experience in Finance, odds are in favour of entry level job. Plus, be ready for the tough competition from your finance experienced classmates.

I do not know much about the US job market, but I got to know from my friends in PGP IIMA-B-C, getting respectable finance job is difficult and is null , if you are not CFA qualified.

I suppose you are from India. :-D

You can try to get into Financial Engineering join as a Quant Developer and then work your way into mainstream Finance.
Another route though risky, expensive and very difficult would be to get into Top 5 Finance Schools in US: Wharton, Booth, Columbia, NY Stern, Harvard/Stanford. Once you can get a job into these then getting a job should be relatively easier.
