Work experience will be more valuable than a master's degree in engineering. Seek challenges in the workplace and try to get some leadership experience. Business schools like it when you do interesting things around something for which you are passionate. Get involved in the community as well--try to have an impact both at work and in your outside activities. Don't just participate, but rather lead and inspire others. This will result in good recommendations which help you stand out from your peers, a critical hurdle to get attention from b-schools. Also do some research on your desired consulting goal and see what kind of experience would be most attractive. B-schools and consulting firms love engineers because you can solve problems. Keep a diary of your significant acheivements and use it to remind your bosses when it comes time to get recos.
