career progression in Finance and General Management [#permalink] New post 24 May 2005, 09:46
Hi all,
I had a couple of questions regarding career progress post-MBA:
1. If after an MBA from a top 10-15 school in the US you get into a top IB firm (say ML, Citibank, GS etc) what are the options after around 5 years in the job? Do people generally stick to these firms, or move on to other things? If so, where to? I know it varies from person to person, but I just want to get a feel for how things work generally?
2. What kind of jobs are there for general management out there? Again I am assuming an MBA from a top 10-15 school in the US.
thanks.

1. Depending on market conditions, MBAs in IB typically move to the following:
- Private equity
- Hedge funds
- Corporate finance
- Business development
- Venture capital
- More banking

2. Moving into a pure general management position straight out of MBA is a likely as one would think. However, there are some rotation programs that eventually lead to a GM position (P&L responsibility).
- General electric is the classic example, however you can find simlilar type stuff in Tech (software and Internet), Consumer product goods (Brand Management is another classic GM position), healthcare, and Retail. Actually Citigroup has a fin. general management program that is supposed to be pretty good.
