Career Switchers - oil/energy to government + optional essay [#permalink] New post 04 Aug 2012, 21:43
Hi All!

I'm applying for app season this 2013.

(1) CAREER OBJECTIVE: I am currently in corporate finance for MNC Oil/Energy and would like to make the switch to work for government in the long-term (i.e. Department of Finance, Department of Trade and Industry). To prepare me for government, however, would like to work in a development bank i.e. IFC or Asian Development Bank first. I have been working for four years in the rural areas/province (depots and refineries).

I also have a family business, and because of my obligations for my family, will probably have to work there part-time (Saturdays). Should i mention this in my career goals essay or just mention my "main" career objective?

How would adcoms view this career switch? In college, i was in the student council and involved in political organizations. Also have some extras like working for our village association, etc.

I live in a third world country in Southeast Asia.

(2)OPTIONAL ESSAY: I have a 3.65 GPA but declining. Should i explain in optional essay? Or leave as is? Thanks!

(3)OTHER DUMB QUESTIONS: What do you call development financing in the dropdown lists that you often have to put in updating your profile in places like MyWhartonMBA?
Is that "financial services" or banking? Not sure at all.
Also, would my current industry be corporate finance or say, Energy/Utilities?

Thanks so much! Any insight would be most appreciated.

Also please delete my previous post. seemed to have doubled.

Would also like to add that prior to corporate finance, i was in Sales (again in the rural areas). 4 years FT work-experience and Certified Public Accountant.

1) You're career switch seems to make sense. It is anchored in past experience. I am sure you have good reasons for wanting to make the switch. Provide them and you should do fine on that question.
2) Leave it, unless there was some real clear and obvious reason and the decline was marked.
3) Financial Services. For your current industry, I would put Energy/Utilities; that's currently your industry.

Best,
Linda Abraham

Hi Linda, many thanks!

The decline is marked.
My GPA was a solid 4.0 in the first three yeasr and then became 3.0 in 4th and around 3.5 in 5th. Does this warratn optional essay? I'm thinking of explaining just the 4th year.

Then I agree you should address the circumstances that caused or contributed to the drop. They'll want to know what happened.

Best,
Linda

Thanks Linda, you reply so fast!! Yup i had a personal crisis in my 4th year, which i addressed in my "what i didnt do well" essay in HBS. i will share this story in my optional essays for other schools explaining my grade. somehow the drop in my grades is kind of a "blessing" because i wouldnt know how to insert this story in any essay prompt in other schools haha
