Career Vision Stanford, HBS, Wharton [#permalink] New post 19 Aug 2011, 18:37
Hello,

Hope you are doing well,

My name is John Lewis and I am very much interested in applying to HBS, Stanford and Wharton.

I have worked for a top consulting firm in the Energy Sector. I have one quick question and would appreciate any steer from you.

During my tenure at my firm, I have had the opportunity to work on both Renewable Energy projects as well as on Oil & Gas projects (improving sustainability of oil & gas).

In the career vision essay for HBS, Stanford and Wharton. Do you think I am better off emphasizing on Renewable Energy or on the Oil & Gas experience. I gather that Renewables are the next hot-topic for every one living today. However, having worked in the middle east, Oil & Gas is as well a hot topic.

Would really appreciate it if you can let me know whether I should discuss renewables, Oil & Gas or both?

Many thanks for your help,

Cheers,
John

Expert's post
Hi John,

Not sure what you mean by discussing it. Do you mean what your long-term vision should be? Because your long-term goal/vision should connect to your own passions. Key experiences, people, moments in your life should point your compass towards a specific long-term goal or vision. It's the "why" of it all and that is what schools want to see. Your short-term goals are about drawing on recent experiences and accomplishments and showing that you have the chops to get the job (with an MBA under your belt, of course), but long-term goals aren't about pragmatism but rather ambition (and not just success, but ambition to bring meaning to the world - best way to think of it is "why are you willing to devote your life's work to X?").

Avoid thinking about what is most buzz worthy or anything like that and think in terms of what truly makes you tick.

Obviously, the best advice I can give is to recommend working with an expert who can help you unpack all of this and really think in terms of who you are, what you want to do, and what you are capable of doing. We are proud of the fact that our clients gain as much understanding around their goals as they do finesse in shaping that story for their essays.

Anyway, good luck to you and I hope this helps somewhat.

Respectfully,

Paul Lanzillotti
