Career vision vs Career goal [#permalink] New post 13 Nov 2007, 13:03
How do you guys differentiate a "Career goal" from a "Career vision"?

A career vision is more about the philosophy behind the career goal? So essentially a career vision explains a career goal?

Career vision = long term plotting out of what you think your career arc might encompass. Career goal = more immediate, short term accomplishment on your horizon.
At least that's how I read it...

Career goal = the end point
Career vision = the path taken to reach the end point

I dont know if it makes sense but thats how I interpret it.

Career goal = what want to acheive
Career vision = how will you acheive it or plan

Career vision = what HBS expects you to formulate in terms of a grand formula in an optional essay

Career goal = what the rest of the schools ask you in Essay No 1

Obviously this context is new for me, but having had some experience in formulating vision, mission, and goal statements for nonprofits, my thoughts are more in line with saurabh's idea.

I take it HBS (or whoever) isn't giving you much in terms of direction?
