Cars X and Y were traveling together on a straight road at a constant speed of 55 miles per hour when car X stopped for five minutes. If car Y continued to travel at 55 miles per hour, how many minutes from the time that car X resumed traveling did it take Car X traveling at 60 miles per hour to catch up with Y?
X- Minutes traveled by either Car X or Car Y
Which way is best?
Start + End = Start + End
55x + 55( x + 5)= 55x + 60x
Car Y or Car X
Start + End
55( x-5) + 60x = 55( x +5) + 55( x)

What's wrong with my third approach, Y travels for an additional five minutes, X travels for an additional five minutes, see if you can point out the error.

Car X traveled for five fewer minutes whereas Car Y traveled for five greater minutes.

Answer's 55 minutes.
When X stopped for 5 minutes Y kept moving @ 55 mph.
In this 5 minutes he went 55/12 miles ahead.

When X resumes and starts going @ 60 mph the relative velocity is 5 mph
It will take 55/12 * 60/5 minutes = 55 minutes to make up that distance.
