I am confused between A and D.

IMO A because i feel "their" is D could also mean "characteristics".

any more explanations?

A seems to be the best.

B, D and E are out for ambiguous use of "their".
C seems to be changing meaning.

in D the placement of "should" changes the meaning of the sentence

E is parallel and preserves the original intentions...go with E

Hi mates,

IMO D

A) in part that their steers should acquire certain characteristics
B) in part for the acquisition of certain characteristics in their steers
C) partly because of their steers acquiring certain characteristics
D) partly because certain characteristics should be acquired by their steers
E) partly to acquire certain characteristics in their steers

A, B and E out, because the grammar structure is "partly because ... and partly because"

between C and D, I'd go with D because //-ism with the second part

OA and Source?

Thanks

going with E also.

Somewhat confused about in part vs partly. Doesn't this follow the same rules as merely vs mere?

I dont understand the "to acquire" part in E. Can someone explain. I found D a better option than E.

Hi,

one reason why D is wrong is because of the word ' should'. 'Should' imposes a moral obligation and cattle breeders cannot impose a moral obligation on the steers.

Therefore E is better.

OE SAYS:
"In option D":
Passive voice "should be acquired by" is awkward and illogical

In E:
to acquire certain characterstics is concise and clear.

-------------------

partly to acquire ..X and partly .. to provide Y (hybrid vigor.)

For me E sounds bad...

The //ism says that it should be "partly because... and partly because..."

However, if OA is E... well, I'd have a mistake here

Cheers

E
partly to acquire...and partly because. They are parallel
You also need a "to" after the first partly to indicate action (don't know if this makes sense).
