Does anyone have any input into the weight of the CFA designation in the application process? Do committees take this into consideration? I got a relatively low GMAT score, 610, but am still hoping for Carnegie-Mellon since it is a quant. focused program.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Hey there,

While a CFA is a great accomplishment (depending on the level), it's becoming more and more common and it's definitely not a substitute for a low GMAT. GMAT scores hit rankings. CFA designations don't. It's an additional data point that isn't required nor necessary but can be a nice little plus.

If you're looking at Tepper - you should retake the GMAT. They're very quant focused and have a really strong average score (693) and a 80% range of 630 - 750. You're currently below that 80% mark which isn't a place you want to be.

I know that isn't great news but I hope the honesty helps!

I'd take some of that effort you committed for the CFA and divert it to your GMAT studies; no reason that you can't approach the 700 area if you studied w/ one-third of the intensity for the CFA.
