Chance at top schools? [#permalink] New post 09 Nov 2012, 08:38
Hello,

My profile is as follows:

26yr old white male
Undergraduate: BA in Econ from well-regarded state-school; 3.8 GPA
GMAT: 710
WE: 2 years as a financial analyst in a Fortune 500 leadership development program with rotations in different finance/accounting roles; 2 plus years as a senior financial analyst within the same company
Additional: involvement and leadership role with a non-profit organization

I am interested in venture capital, consulting and industry roles.

Can you please assess my chances at the top programs?

Thanks.

You have good work experience and a solid GPA and GMAT score. Working for the nonprofit is an added bonus.

All of the top 10 schools are difficult to get into, but you do have a very competitive profile. I would cast your net wide and apply to a handful of the top schools and hopefully you will get into one that you really love.

Best of luck.

You have built a great foundation and have the basis to build a competitive candidacy. However, while your grades, scores, work, etc. are all very competitive -- there are a lot of other very competitive candidates who will be applying to the same programs that you are. This means that you have to really dedicate time, effort and attention to all remaining aspects of your application -- essays, recommendations, interview, resume, application, etc. If you are able to perform on these aspects of your application to the level that you have performed in other aspects of your life -- I would recommend that you do apply to top programs. My usual recommendation is to apply to six schools -- including three that most people consider reach.

Your profile is pretty good, and so it will just depend on execution of your application to make you stand out. You'll need to draw upon your personal experiences, beliefs and what has shaped you to give the Admissions Committee a sense of you are as a person and give them a reason to like you.
