Chances at Top MBA Programs [#permalink] New post 23 Mar 2010, 12:23
I'm planning to apply to MBA programs in the next year or two. I'm curious about what people think my chances might be at the top 5 programs. My basic stats are below. I expect I can write some solid essays and am sure I will have great recs.

College:

Top LAC - GPA: 3.5 (history)

graduated with distinction and wrote honors thesis

Work:

2 years of banking (analyst) at Lazard in nyc (restructuring group)

2 years of MM private equity (leadership position within entrepreneurial shop)

GMAT - 750

I'm also Native American and plan to write one of my essays about my connection with my heritage, some of the native american organizations in which i have been deeply involved and how i plan to use an MBA to help me further some of these efforts within the community.

thanks for any input

Is there some reason you think you wouldn't be competitive? That profile looks pretty good. I think you have a good shot anywhere.

there is no specific reason I think i wouldn't be at least competitive. I don't see much sense (for my particular work situation) in going to business school unless I go to HBS, stan, or wharton. I guess my question was really if anyone thought I had a realistic shot at any of those schools (given the intense competition)

Your profile hits all the marks, but it is similar to that of many others, so bottom line is: Write some stellar essays! See the standard books http://www.amazon.com/Great-Application ... 878&sr=8-1 or http://www.amazon.com/How-Get-Into-Top- ... 911&sr=1-1 or search for info in the forums here. Best of Luck!

Profile looks great so far. ThomasD, have you used those books before? Any of the two you would specifically recommend?

I do not have the first, but I have the second book and am currently working through it. Being an avid gmatclub forum reader, many things will sound familiar - and I do not mean simply the GMAT aspects - however, I find it quite useful as a quick reference for the essay writing and general positioning aspects of the application. In the bigger scheme of things I feel it's $20 well spent
