Chances for PT UCLA/USC with 700+ GMAT and 2.7 GPA [#permalink] New post 10 Jun 2009, 15:10
Hi,

This is my first time to the site and I have recently decided to take the plunge and apply to B-School for Fall of '10. I live in LA and will only be applying to part-time programs in the area (UCLA, USC, Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, possibly Cal State LB).

I would love to be able to get into either UCLA or USC, but am concerned about my GPA. I have always been a VERY good standardized test taker, and am realistically aiming for a 700+ on the GMAT. However, my downfall is that my undergrad GPA was sub 3.0 (closer to 2.5 than 3.0 - I think it was around 2.7). How bad is this going to hurt me in the application process? Does it help AT ALL that I went to a VERY good undergrad school (#6 best public school, top 30 overall) or do they only care about what my GPA was? What kind of score should I be shooting for in order for them to overlook my GPA? Would a 700 do it? 750?

Assuming I get decent recommendations and write good essays, do I have any chance at all at either UCLA or USC?

Thanks so much for your response!

Welcome to GMAT Club Swirvi!

I moved your post to the Business School Forum as you will probably get more replies here for your specific question (Lower GPA) rather than in the GMAT forum.

Your chances would totally depend on your GMAT and essays. With 700+ score, you should be competitive for UCLA FEMBA. The number of applicants is really down this year for all PT programs.

Well I'll let you know how I do, I have a 2.1 GPA (american school too :D) but 760 GMAT and I'm applying to UCLA.

I think for PT programs GMAT does matter in that they care that you are able to handle the course work. a 2.7 isn't actually too bad for the PT's programs since GPA's are lower. But you can't have average GMAT and below average GPA without great work experience.
