I am curious as to how changing jobs will be seen by ad coms and what may be considered an acceptable number of job/company changes.
I worked for a military defence company in the US in financial analysis role for 4 years during college and then internationally for the same company for a year after college. Having been away from my native London for 6 years I decided I wanted to move home and change careers, I now work for a large name American investment bank (back office I'm afraid!). Having been here 18 months I now have oppurtunities to move into more interesting roles with other companies, largely asset managers.
Before I make my decision on whether to stay or go I am wondering:
How much will moving companies so quickly will hurt me on my MBA application?
Would I be better off staying put and trying to get 1 or 2 promotions in my current company?
Many thanks in advance for your guidance.
Don't let MBA admissions dictate your career choices.
Focus on what is best for YOU right now, and what you would do regardless of what you perceive others may expect of you. If the new job is a compelling one, then go for it. Trying to figure out whether adcoms a few years down the line would care about it is the WRONG way to look at it - that is, it's wrong if you feel this is YOUR career and your life, and not someone else's to live. This isn't some idealistic BS, but it's about taking full ownership of what you want from your career, rather than constantly looking for something external to validate your decision (whether it's future employers, future adcoms, future spouse(s) or in-laws, etc.).
