I am hesitating between B and E ...
I do not see the basic SC mistakes here, just wordy or unappropriate sub sentence links...
Could you please develop your answer ?

I didnt consider B because of the 'being' construction. Among the choices E addresses any modifier issue well. Hence E.
Very reluctant.....(who?), Charles....cosntruction struck me first. Then wehn I read the full sentence it looked right. Hence E.

E should be it
B uses present participle and describes a present condition
For example, you would use present participle to describe a particular context to separate 2 time dimensions:
He was playing when his brother called him
context: he was playing
triggering event: his brother called him
In the original question, the whole context and subject's action are set in the past so there is no need to use past participle to separate 2 different time frames.
