Chicago GSB and MIT Sloan [#permalink] New post 09 Aug 2004, 20:21
I have heard nightmare stories about these programs, focusing on the fact that grading at both programs is quite tough, and that the heavy slant toward deep quant work makes the classroom work much harder than at other top schools.

Can you comment as to whether or not this is true? On paper the schools dont look much different than other top programs, but the student feedback section of certain websites and periodicals like Business Week have me wondering whether or not I could cut it at GSB or Sloan (I've got an ok quant background.....no engineering/math focus, decent background in investment mgmt and finance...)

Thanks.

Hi,

It is important to remember that Chicago has one of the most flexible MBA programs of any elite school. Thus, you can select courses that have less of a mathematical focus if you prefer. Both Chicago and MIT attract a number of Humanities and Social Science students (including and not including Economics).

I think that it is also important to consider student feedback that one might find on websites but it is difficult to do so when you know so little about the commentators and their expectations of the program.

I had heard such stories about Darden ( a few years ago), but not about MIT or Chicago. our clients have attended both these schools and been happy.

Nonetheless there is no question that they are quant heavy schools. If you haven't had calc and statistics for a long time and don't use those subjects professionally, then you can freshen up those skills by retaking those subjects. Once you do so, I don't think you will have any problem at either program.

You can also ask this question to current students with similar background to yours. You can probably post this kind of question here on GMAT Club or on BW Forum.

Good luck!
