I heard that Chicago people are friendlier (and less competitive) than Wharton... wait, I heard that from kwam... so nevermind the biased opinion.

I have heard that Chico in comparison to Wharton has much richer social life (= a lot more fun there). Although being individualistic, Chico students seem to be more helpful than Wh. team-oriented students. Some Stan alum said that Chico alumni can be much more successful than Stan's or HBS'.

Hmmm... after visiting Wharton 4 times (including an amazing Winter Welcome) and nearly matriculating, I can tell you that the social life at Wharton is just fine The students I've met and hung around with are having a more than peachy time. And while I know Philly isn't NY or SF, it's still a great city with more than enough to keep you busy for two years. Also, I've met a _lot_ of Wharton students and alums. I haven't really come across the arrogant/hypercompetitive stereotype yet. I'm sure they exist, but they exist at every school. I certainly don't mean to denigrate U of C in any way. It's a terrific school, and I have several friends who attended. I'm just trying to defend Wharton. p.s. Shmegs- As a Bulls, Blackhawks, and Cubs fan, I am unamused by your little comparison

Hahaha, terry sorry bout that...as a Boston fan I'm really spoiled at the moment. I like both Chicago and Philly a lot, I really don't think you can go wrong. To support terry's point after visiting the school and speaking with a lot of alums I have yet to meet anyone who was really arrogant or offputting in fact everyone I met was really humble and nice.

One thing that Philly certainly beats Chi-town, is for skiing, right? No...skiing in Penn is terrible. I used to compete and went to a few comps there and they are horrible mountains. Vermont and upstate NY are probably the best options. Since you wont have time to really ski besides vacations Chicago probably has an advantage since its closer to the Rockies and cheaper flights. If you want to ski a lot you should have applied to Tuck. Heck Stanford and Haas are better places to be for skiing than either Wharton or Chicago. As a diehard skier I am not really looking forward to live in a completely flat area.

While Chicago is "on the rise", I would say that Wharton is generally considered a notch above / better known by virtually everyone (i.e., MBA applicants, recruiters, non-business people). This is especially true outside the U.S., where Wharton has a MUCH bigger name - and alumni network - than Chicago (e.g., Asia, Europe). Just my$0.02 though...

Unless you go to school in the Rockies, Stanford/Haas would be your best bet for skiing. Lake Tahoe area and the Sierra Nevadas are very NICE! Day trips that take about 3 hours each way from Berkeley. Some 2nd year's go every weekend during ski season. hahaha.

I'm really not the ski expert here, first time I saw snow I had 27, I just told that because a friend of mine who's at Wharton right now told me he was heading Poconos this weekend (I don't eve know if it's good or not). BTW, he told me that Wharton would be a good environment for me because, most of the Brazilian students use to study just by the exams. He told that because I'm from an engineering school famous because the kids are procrastinators, we used to study one or a couple of days before the exams, kids were smart (I was an exception) and partied hard. I don't think I want the same thing, or well, perhaps he's talking about kids, who are partying hard yet, I may be old right now . Anyway, I'm not trying to denigrate any image here, I'm sure that many guys at GSB also party hard, just trying to tell what someone from inside told me...

I agree with this general perception elhajoui. It is actually more easy to see here in Australia; and I am truly impartial I got dinged from both. elhajoui wrote: While Chicago is "on the rise", I would say that Wharton is generally considered a notch above / better known by virtually everyone (i.e., MBA applicants, recruiters, non-business people). Re-Finance: Wharton has dominated Finance for years, except in the academic realm where Chicago fares better. Sure, it may not matter if you want to do IB/Trading, but for PE/VC it makes a HUGE difference.
Example: a study of 497 Venture Capitalists in the United States reveals the following educational backgrounds:
HBS: 24% Stanford: 20% (v. large relative to size of school) Wharton: 19% Chicago: 4% Columbia: 3% Kellogg: 3% Other/non-MBA: 27%

Got this from the BW forums. Now that I think of it, there may be copyright issues...I am pulling it off. Will find the BW link later and give it to people. Sorry guys, I am a bit paranoid!
