Climatic shifts are so gradual as to be indistinguishable at first from ordinary fluctuations in the weather.

(A) so gradual as to be indistinguishable
(B) so gradual they can be indistinguishable
(C) so gradual that they are unable to be distinguished
(D) gradual enough not to be distinguishable
(E) gradual enough so that one cannot distinguish them

Hi, folks,

The OE said that choice C confusedly refers to the climatic shifts themselves as being unable when it is really people who are unable at first to distinguish climatic shifts.

But I think that choice C is passivity. Why cannot we say that? Could anybody explain it?

thank you.

I vote for A

Like you say, C does sound passive and wordy. Also, OE is right . C gives you an impression as though it is the weather that can't distinguish changes in Climatic shifts. Hence is wrong

Who are 'they' in C. The idiomSo X that Y in C is only a trap...what goes after - especailly 'unable to be distinguishable' is terrible.

"They" means climatic shifts.

Can the subject "shifts" not execute the distinguished action, right?

thank you.

here "shifts" means the "change in climatic conditions". I agree with the OA. Choice C gives the impression that the climatic shifts are not being able to get distinguished. Choice C potrays "climatic shifts" like a person.

I will go with A. They is clearly ambiguous in C, though I thought for once that C would be it.
