I like D.
I think we can use "enough not to be" and it is also idiomatic.

Need some more views.

B,D, E are out. Not idiamatic.

a. so (x) as to be (Y).... correct idiom
c. so (x) that (y).... also correct idiom

the catch is in C "unable to be distinguished"... it can be summed up in on word "indistinguishable". So, A is preferred. Shorter & precise.

Although brevity is rewarded on the GMAT, we need to look at this sentence a little closer. Notice the non-underlined portion that follows contains the word "from."

Four reasons why I stand by (C):

1. Use of the active voice (always preferred)
2. ....distinguish X from Y... is also idiomatic.
3. "as to be" is an all time favorite ETS trap
4. "they" has a clear referent ---> climatic shifts

correct structure : ..... so ......that ......
or ........adj enough (for someone) to .........

E is clearly unidiomatic.

A sounds good...

Since PR says so[adjective] as to [verb] is fine....

there are two types of idioms here..

so .. that
or so .. as to..

C also looks good but too wordy... hence A..

BTW.. I could nto solve this in 2 mins.... I had to go back and look at books.. I would have mostly gone for C under time pressure..

Yeah, I missed the club I was gone to Singapore for a day on urgent business trip.

Yes, 'C' is clear in meaning but is wordy by putting 'a clause', 'A' does the same job just by putting 'a noun'

"so gradual as to be indistinguishable " is good enough AND
"so gradual that they are unable to be distinguished " is wordy, same meaning is conveyed by 'A' in economical way!

"so X as to be Y" is correct idiom; also, look at it this way, closely:
"Xs are indistinguishable" VS "Xs are unable to be distinguished" , former is concise.

as far as other choices are concerned,
B - "so....that" form is needed.
D - "gradual enough to do something" is better & correct form
E - "gradual enough to do something" is better & correct form

I go with A.

I ruled out C on the grounds that it unncessarily mentions " unable..distinguished" which basically means "indistinguishable"

I'll go for C. The reason why D is wrong is that the proper idiom for D should be " X enough to Y." This idiom is used when x is the criteria by which an ability to achieve y is measured.

(B) so gradual they can be indistinguishable
(C) so gradual that they are unable to be distinguished
(D) gradual enough not to be distinguishable
(E) gradual enough so that one cannot distinguish them

A.

Choice is b/w A & C. A uses 'so X as to be Y' while C uses 'so X that Y'.
Though GMAT prefers the latter, C leaves the question open that they are unable to be distinguished by whom?

Though 'so X to Y' is the correct idiom, in this case 'to be' is required since the sentence does not specify who is doing the distinguishing.

A should be correct.

What's the OA?
