Why wouldn't you register with a gmail or other internet email address that's a lot harder to trace?

Probably because of two reasons:

1. They don't think they are doing anything wrong (which might be true based on how some use the website)
2. People who feel a need to cheat probably don't plan well or put a lot of thought into what they do.
