Hi all

Just putting a shout out to see if anyone can help me. I haven’t really got a great grasp of the command subjunctive. If someone could explain what it is and how to use it, I’d be very grateful.

Hi,
See if this can be of some use.

The Command Subjunctive

Subjunctive mood sentences are somewhat unusual in that they do not follow normal rules of grammar related to subject-verb and tense usage. The indicative mood indicates something is true. However, the subjunctive mood indicates a desire, intention, command, recommendation request, resolution, or advice. It is also used along with such words as advisable, better, desirable, and directive, essential, fitting, imperative, important, necessary, urge urgent and vital.

There are subjunctive mood uses in the present tense and the past tense. In the present subjunctive, the verb is always in the singular and present tense, even if the subject is plural and the tense is past or future. Sentences in which one would use such verbs as is, are, was, were or will be , should use the root verb - be -, in the case of the subjunctive mood.

Take Away: Command subjunctive entails the following core aspects.

1. There should be an element of mandatoriness, desire or bossism in the con txt.
2. The idiom here is either ; x commanded y that y do z or x commanded that y do z
3. You might see that the connector ‘that “is an essential part of the command subjunctive.
4. The verb of the relative clause or the subordinate clause is always in the base form, irrespective of whether the subject so plural or singular or the tense is past, present or future
