a. eating properl will result
b. proper diet resulted
c. dieting will result
d. proper diet results
e. eating properly results
its c or d? official ans is d. but how come "results"?
"sensible exercise and proper diet" is plural isn't it?

D is wrong for your reason. AND forms a plural subject and so requires an appropriate verb. All the options with RESULTS are wrong. C is the best.

Hmm... I think D is wrong also. Well at least not convinced so. But if I had to pick one, I'd pick A. Nothing wrong with how it's structured.

D is correct b/c it is parallel:
sensible exercise and proper diet,
A, C, and E are incorrect b/c they are not parallel:
this is not to say that we can't use eating or dieting to start the underlined portion of the sentence, but if we choose to use any of these two, we have to change the first part of the sentence to exercising or sensibly exercising for it to remain PARALLEL....
i think that's what this question is testing, so A, C, and E are out and B is out b/c of "resulted"...we don't want past tense...

I vote for D too .. but could someone explain the issue with 'results' which is singular .. is that correct? if so then how come?

Two nouns joined by AND require a plural verb to follow.
"Dieting" is a gerund acting as a noun so there is parallelism between sensible exercise and dieting.

This question is all over the web, but it looks not to have come from ETS or Kaplan (who generally do a good job writing questions), but rather from some guy's website.
We need an answer that is parallel, in the present tense, and uses the plural form "result". None of the choices give it to us.
The question is garbage, the answer is garbage.
