Community Service -- prereq to successful MBA app? [#permalink] New post 27 Feb 2010, 14:20
Getting the feeling that community service is basically required to get into any decent school. But it's just impossible for me -- my job requires 75-90% travel (so I'm never home) and I'm a CFA candidate in addition to everything else. Throw in GMAT and MBA applications and I barely have time to sit down.

Is it difficult to justify *not* having community service experience? If any of you have successfully applied without zillions of community service hours, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thank you.

It is definitely not a requirement. Your community service is used to access what kind of candidate you are. I am pretty sure people gets accepted with 0 community service what so ever. And sure they are people with gazillion hours of service.

If you have not been involved with any community service then associating with anything now, assuming you are applying this year, just gonna tell Ad-Com that you are doing it for the sake of it, just to put it on your app. It won't come across as genuine!

It's not necessary to have community service on your resume, especially if your day job takes up so much of your time. That said, if you haven't gotten involved with community service, it would be good to be able to show that you've taken initiative to do something at work over and above your regular responsibilities. It's a question of whether you are just a worker bee following orders or if you show some sort of leadership.
