Hello Guys,

This is my first post on this GMAT club and unfortunately have to share bad experience with my gmat score of 370. I have to admit that I have rushed towards this exam expecting that if I could get an average score then I am good in getting into business for evening and weekend MBA program. However, my ill fate didn't favor me any luck in getting the expected score. I took MGMAT exams and on every test I scored 500+ but on real exam I completely goofed it up. I used Magoosh for quant and E-gmat for Verbal as I am not a very good reader of text books so I opted these two self study video courses. I was wondering if I can push this around 700 so that I can start my MBA program this year otherwise I may need to postpone for a year, and only knows what happens after next year.

Any help or advice from experts would be much appreciated on this matter as I have to make a call to myself to retake this exam or not.

My profile:

MS in Telecommunications from Univ of Louisiana - Lafayette with GPA 3.8
B.Tech from JNTU-India - GPA ~3.8

Profession: Sr Principal Engineer in a Telecom company.

Thank you
krish.

Hello Krish,

Well, You can definitely score 700 in the GMAT exam but the road ahead is not so easy. Improving score from 370 to 600 will not require as much as effort as it will to improve beyond 600. And certainly, you need to consistently put in effort day in day out.

You have right resources but it seems you have not made an effort to learn from your mistakes or really understand the basics well. You may just read the basics but lack in the application part.

To begin with, RESPECT THE EXAM, THE FORMAT.

* Understand the exam,What is tested on it,How is it graded..Good starting point will be :

If you have access to Internet and have time ,get more active on Gmatclub, post your doubts, help other with their doubts (this is the best way of learning)

You may also want to consider Gmatclub premium membership

For Math: If you are on GC, follow (Tab on left ) ****Bunuel(Math expert), ****VeritasprepKarishma, Mau5, Narenn to begin with.
You can look at Gmatclub math book as well. Brush up your basics in Math, Understand the application and practice and you are set for Math

For Verbal: If you still have access e-gmat course, religiously follow their Sentence correction methodology and you will see immediate gains..for CR and RC if you have access to Egmat then use it or else there are enough resources/reviews for you to consider and decide.

Give yourself atleast 2 months to see an improvement from current levels to ~600-620.

Hope my post helps...Get going!!!

Expert's post
Sorry to hear that. With a high GPA -- it seems the test score doesn't quite affect your ability to take tests. The GMAT is certainly a different animal -- but something critical is missing.

Every person has a different learning style. Do you think videos are not your way or perhaps the style of teaching doesn't match your learning? If you learn better through tutoring -- then perhaps try that. But it can get expensive. We try to present a tutor-like teaching approach and explain things in a very easy-to-understand manner that does not involve fancy grammar terminology. Do check out our program -- but also check out other study approaches that may suit your needs best.

To assist you with the psychological aspects of the test, please see these tips regarding extreme positivity and visualization: http://www.gmatpill.com/about/studying- ... trategies/

Hope that helps.
