Sentence needs the simple past tense to show finished action over a hundred years ago. Sentence is fine as it is.

historical facts should be simple past.

so A is the answer.

It should be A

Past tense should be used coz this sentence refers to to the event in the past.

B,C -> 'have led' is not correct
D -> changes meaning of sentence
E -> awkward phrasing

A is best.
