Conflict between past and past perfect [#permalink] New post 22 Sep 2005, 20:39
Hi,

I would appreciate if I could get an answer to the following question:-

The voluminous personal papaers of thomas Alva Edison reveal that his inventions typically sprang to life not ina flash of inspiration but evolved slowly from previous works.

Well, the answer to this questions is "did not spring to life in a flash of inspiration but evolved slowly".

Here is my question:- should n't the answer be like "did not spring to life ina flash but HAD evolved slowly "??????

the timing in the question is like:-

reveal:- present
sprang to life:- past
and the thoughts came before the inventions sprang to life and hence shouldn't it be past perfect????ie HAD evolved?????

Thanks in advance
