Consider this sentence:
Well-informed people know that Bordeaux is a French region whose most famous export is the wine that bears its name

Can somebody please help me understand what is the referent of 'its' here? Is it wine's or Bordeaux's?

Well there are two possessive pronouns in the sentence 1st- whose and 2nd - its
Now in the sentence the repeated pronouns are presumed to refer to the same antecedent.....(Manhattan GMAT 4th edition, Pronoun Advance section, Nuances of Pronoun Reference, 3.Repeats)
In the sentence "whose" refers to Bordeaux, thus "its" will refer to Bordeaux
