Consulting and the Associate role [#permalink]
28 Dec 2008, 11:28
Hi everyone. So I have a fairly basic question that hopefully you folks can help me out with. Im going through the self exploration exercise to decide what my short term and long term goals are post-MBA. I think Ive come to the conclusion that consulting would be fun. Now this is just based on what Ive heard from others, and just the overall IDEA of consulting in itself seems interesting.
However, Im wondering ... what the heck does an associate do ? What sort of skills do they use day-to-day ? How can an MBA prepare you to be successful in consulting ? Where can i learn about what associates do and how they fit into the overall picture ? Im trying to make my essays as detailed as possible, so the more I know about consulting and the associate role, the better.
Thanks !

Companies label associate differently sometimes, but at my company they are at the manager level. They basically manage staff, but not always, can be a team lead, project manager, involved with selling work to clients, working on proposals and new marketing efforts. They are in the nitty gritty of things as well, they are the ones doing the work, acting as subject matter experts when necessary, selling the work, and maintaining the client relationships. However many just only do the work, varies on the person and his/her ambition.

You should check out the thread "Unconventional answers about management consulting" by Paradosso. Lots of useful info in there.
