Consumers planning to buy recreational equipment tend to buy higher quality,
more expensive equipment when the economy is strong than when it is
weak. Hill and Dale is a business that sells high-quality, expensive camping
and hiking equipment in Boravia. Although all the signs are that Boravia’s
economy is now entering a period of sustained strength, the managers
of the business do not expect a substantial increase in sales.

It is definetly B, C talks about improvement of park facilities, doesnt necessarily mean that the people would not buy the recerational equipment.

I think the answer is B. However, If the facilities of the national parks which has mentioned in C are not hostels or anything like that. Because when the economy grows national parks invest to make hostels then camping equipment will sell less. I think C is not clear so B rules.

I agree with B. C would actually suggest that people would buy more camp equipment. If the parks are nice, people are more likely to buy equipment to use in the parks.

B suggests a reason that sales of equipment won't grow. If the economy is strong, people are leaving the country, not camping and thus equipment won't sell.

B for me also. I feel only B support the conclusion that increase in sale is not expected

I have slightly different opinion here. IMO C.

1. There is no mention, or even slight indication, of overseas vacations in the above stimulus.
2. If the parks were receiving more funds for better fascilities (newer and higher quality instruments), then why would ppl purchase equipments?

I will go with B as its directly related with the paradox mentioned.
C can only be true if its written that extra funding will be mainly used to provide customers camping and hiking equipment.

Very good Reasoning by Ykaiim, But is it that a strengthening qstn requires something from the stimulus. I dont think so, it should be something like an additional information that supports the conclusion.

We need to spare the reasoning and sync a different cause wrt the managers. We need to provide additional support to their claim, why they are so pessimist abt sales.

C has several assumptions for the stem to be true. In picking answer choice, I think we can not make assumptions. That is why B straightforward answer is better option, IMO.

I believe the correct answer is C.

A. A significant proportion of Hill and Dale’s sales are made to customers who enter the store in order to buy one particular item but, once there, find other items to buy as well.

B. In Boravia when the economy is strong, those who might otherwise go camping tend to take vacations overseas.

C . The economic upturn is likely to allow Boravia’s national parks, where most of the camping and hiking is done, to receive extra funding to improve their visitor facilities.

-- Since the economy is on upturn, Boravia's national parks where most of the camping and hiking is done, would receive more funding and in turn more vistor's facilities (i.e. equipments for hiking and camping). Hence the sales manager thinks lesser people will buy the equipments and hence the reduced sales.

D. Advances in materials technology have led to the development of hiking and camping equipment that is more comfortable and lightweight than before.

E. Many people in Boravia not only are committed to preserving the country’s wilderness areas but also are interested in spending some time in them.

We need to show some other strong reason, while in B:
B. In Boravia when the economy is strong, those who might otherwise go camping tend to take vacations overseas.

This might shakes this choice.

The paradox:Customers tend to buy better quality, more expensive camping equipments when economy is good but sales will not be very substantial. Why?
We can presume from this that there will not be many customers buying the equipments, even though the equipment bought will be of better quality. So, what happened to the customers, then?

B) this provides perfect answer. It explained the paradox beautifully...the "missing" link
C)It says that the visitors facility will be improved. How does this effect the customers? If the improvements meant the camping ground or the washing facilities or the electrical outlets (etc..) are improved, then it will boost the sales of camping equipments since more people will go camping. On the other hand, if it meant the facilities now included a "motel type" rooms, then not many people will buy the equipment. Plus, I would not call it camping either..Take it from a regular camper...!

My Take on B

The statemnt "Consumers planning to buy recreational equipment tend to buy higher quality,more expensive equipment when the economy is strong than when it is

" is a general statement while statement " Hill and Dale is a business that sells high-quality, expensive camping
and hiking equipment in Boravia. Although all the signs are that Boravia’s
economy is now entering a period of sustained strength, the managers
of the business do not expect a substantial increase in sales.
is something specific for the town Boravia.

And choice B " In Boravia when the economy is strong, those who might
otherwise go camping tend to take vacations overseas. " presents something specific related to town Boravia camping trend somewhat inversely proportional to good economy.

So B :)

C . The economic upturn is likely to allow Boravia’s national parks, where most of the camping and hiking is done, to receive extra funding to improve their visitor facilities.....WHICH VISITOR FACILITIES? FACILITIES ,,, IN ANY CASE COULD BE TOILET FACILITIES, SHOPPING ANTIQUES, EATERIES, WATER PROVISION AT IMPORTANT PLACES...ETC....FACILITIES MAY NOT INCLUDE TENTS/ CAMPING AND ADVENTURE MATERIAL...........
