Consumers may not think of household cleaning products to be [#permalink] New post 30 Nov 2008, 23:26
221. Consumers may not think of household cleaning products to be hazardous substances, but many of them can be harmful to health, especially if they are used improperly.
(A) Consumers may not think of household cleaning products to be
(B) Consumers may not think of household cleaning products being
(C) A consumer may not think of their household cleaning products being
(D) A consumer may not think of household cleaning products as
(E) Household cleaning products may not be thought of, by consumers, as

I have one doubt...What should be the subject of the question? consumer or the product? ...And...can we change the subject of the statement?

IMO D

Subject is surely products because consumers can NOT be "but many of them can be harmful to health, especially if they are used improperly." Products are harmful and used improperly. A, B brings in confusion by making consumer plural since in that case referent of "they" in remaining sentence is NOT clear

Yup out of D and E, D looks more promising as it has less chances of being ambigious.

Consumers thought is the subject and NOT the product

Object of the prep. "of" in the subject clause is never a subject !!

You can change the subject but that would make it passive and akward
