Contrary is used to show that something is incorrect (for example "on the contrary") - in this case the thought or belief is wrong. Contrast is used to compare two different things (for example "In contrast to LA's traffic, the traffic here flows quite smoothly). You can substitute "in contrast" with "As opposed to" or "as compared to."
The sentence is saying that popular belief is incorrect, not comparing popular belief to olympic games or what winners received.
