Option C has Subject-Verb error.

a variety of QUANTITY (plural/singular) should go with verb (plural/singular) like minority or majority. Moreover, the semicolon is necessary. Actually, I miss the colon. So, I choose A (wrong) instead of D.

Nice question. Kudos for you :D

apply SANAM rule here i.e focus on prepositional phrase here " a variety of recent studies" ,so recent studies is plural so plural verb "have" is correct here

IMO D.

The semicolon is required here. The latter half of the sentence introduces an independent clause. The semicolon provides the proper punctuation.
Conjunctions in options B and E are wrong.
Option A is wrong because of the comma.
Between C and D, the subject-verb agreement error has to be caught.
In C, the subject and the verb do not agree. It seems to indicate that the variety itself has begun to demonstrate. This is nonsensical.

Thus option D, which uses the proper subject-verb and the semicolon, is correct.

C has a singular verb, which doesn't agree with studies.........so D should be the answer

Why not A???

A is wrong because the semicolon is required here after "Thursday evening". The reason is simple: the "in fact" introduces an entirely different clause independent of the previous clause; thus the sentence actually consists of two independent clauses joined by the semicolon. That is why A is wrong.

In D, the correct answer, the semicolon is properly used, making it clear that two independent clauses are joined.

Hope this helps.
