Hmmm...The sentence isn't underlined (again!) but A says :would gradually undermine it . So I'm guessing that this is the underlined portion.

With this assumption, I'm going for B.
With D, ethnicity is repeated and is redundant.

This cannot be an OG problem. A is clearly wrong on the GMAT b/c the referrent must precede the pronoun.

went with D too for the same reason.
Looking back in D ethinicity is indeed redundant and can be substituted by the pronoun "It".

According to "The Little Brown Handbook", pronouns can come before for after their antecedents. Here is an example.

Its constant increases make the tax bill a dreaded document.

Here BILL is the antecedent of pronoun ITS.
