And in the past, when the pie was still growing, management could afford to acquiesce. No longer. Until productivity resumes its growth, there can be no justification for further increases in the compensation of workers.

C points to a reason why the pie is increasing. If the pie is increasing then management's argument falls apart.

I think A is put in there to appeal to our sense of right and wrong and not to point out the weakness in the argument.

B and D do not rebut the argument at all. E sounds like whining and doesn't attack the argument.
