Cotrell is , at best, able to write magazine articles of average quality, The most compelling pieces of evidence for this are those few of the numerous articles submitted by Cotrell that are superior, since Cotrell, who is incapable of writing an articile that is better than average, must obviously have plagiarized superior ones.

The argument is most vulnerable to criticism on which one of the following grounds?

A. It simply ignores the existence of potential counterevidence,
B. It generalized from atypical occurances.
C. It presupposes what it seeks to establish.
D. It relies on the judgement of experts in a matter to which their expertise is irrelevent.
E. It infers limits on ability from a few isolated lapses in performance.

This is a question on circular reasoning.

The author wants to prove that cotrell must obviously have plagiarized superior ones. because he/she cant write articles of superior quality.

And it has already assumed that he/she cant write article of superior quality

Therefore C must be the correct answer.

C.

The argument uses its' conclusion as an evidence.

Can you please explain what do these "It presupposes" and "what it seeks to establish" refer to?

The argument is most vulnerable to criticism on which one of the following grounds?

A. It simply ignores the existence of potential counterevidence, - Not applicable here. Argument tells that a few of Cortells articles are plagiarized. So even the existence of a counter evidence does not challenge the argument as such
B. It generalized from atypical occurances. It is not a generalization from atypical occurances. His avg articles are 'typical'
C. It presupposes what it seeks to establish.
D. It relies on the judgement of experts in a matter to which their expertise is irrelevent. Out of scope
E. It infers limits on ability from a few isolated lapses in performance.
It is not a few isolated lapses

To me C is the best answer. It assumes at the beginning of the arguement that the articles are average. This is what 'presupposes' means. If we attack this assumption made initially then the argument fails.

What argument presuppose (i.e what it assumes in the beginning) : cotrell cant write superior articles.

What is seeks to establish : Cortell cant write superior articles.

How is it establishing this: using the conclusion of the argument : therefore she must have plagiarized.

Hope this clarifies

Hi Rajath. I did not understand your point. "He himself"? Cortell is a person about whom someone else is talking.
