Counting words on AWA [#permalink] New post 23 Nov 2010, 15:33
Hi,

I have my GMAT in 2 days, and I understand that approximately 450 - 500 word essay should be fine. However I have a few questions regarding the word count:
1. What would be an effective method of word count during the GMAT ( I am so used the Word processor's count that I am completely unaware approximately how many words can fit on a line specifically GMAT's Processor. )
2. Is it a good method to keep a track of the words. I mean is it an effective strategy as you lose valuable seconds in the process ?
3. Is there any prescribed word limit for the paragraph ? Could I create a short 2 line paragraph towards the end ?

Any other opinions that you might have regarding word count on AWA are not just welcome but much appreciated.

Thank you!

Hey devashish,

Good question - I'm more a fan of sentence/paragraph "count" than anything because it's much easier to track and much more natural, at least in my mind. I'd strive for 5-6 paragraphs of 3-4 sentences each as a goal. At maybe 15-20 words per sentence that gets you in the 400-450 range, but I think it's easier to follow at the sentence/paragraph level.

For the paragraphs, you should look for:

1 Introduction paragraph
3-4 support/counterargument paragraphs
1 Conclusion paragraph

If you've done that and taken 3-4 sentences apiece you shouldn't really need to spend any time counting words (which, if you're worried about having enough to say, will only cost you time, anyway).

I hope that helps...
