CR- Because of a rare type of fungus that killed off many cacao trees in Brazil, there was an unusually meager harvest of cocoa beans this year. The wholesale price of cocoa solids and cocoa butter has increased significantly and does not look likely to fall in the foreseeable future. As a result, the retail price of chocolate is certain to increase within six months.
Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the argument above?
Consumers will purchase other sweets if the price of chocolate increases.
Researchers have discovered an effective method to kill the fungus.
Dark and bittersweet varieties of chocolate will be affected more seriously than milk varieties.
The price of chocolate has decreased steadily for three years.
Most chocolate in stores is manufactured from cocoa that was purchased two years earlier.
1) Rare type of fungus kill many cocoa trees in Brazil
2) Result in poor harvest of cocoa beans this year
3) Wholesale price of cocoa solids + cocoa butter increased significantly
4) Reatil price of chocolate will increase within 6 months
A - Irrelevant
B - Irrelevant. There is no correlation between the fungus and the increase in wholesale price.
C - Irrelevant as we did not go into specific types of choclates
D - Irrelevant. Decresing price for the past 3 years does not suggest price will continue to dip.
E is the best choice. If most chocolates in stores is made from cocoa that was purchased 2 years back, then the recent increase in prices of cocoa solids/butter will not be translated to the retail price of chocolates.
A - does not weaken the fact that cholocate prices may increase
B - this may weaken the argument as the shortage of cocoa may not be for long
C - out of scope
D - out of scope
E - the argument says chocolate prices will increase in 6 months, so that does not concern the chocolates in stores already, but those that are being made now and will be in stores in 6 months.
