Compared to a carnivore, an herbivore needs relatively few [#permalink]

Hey, just want to let you know I missed this one and would like to have an explanation on this one. Compared to a carnivore, an herbivore needs relatively few pounds of plants as food to be able to produce a pound of protein. Since carnivores feed on both herbivores and other carnivores, the accumulated consumption of thousands of pounds of plants is needed for a carnivore to produce a pound of protein. This argument is best completed by which of the following? A) herbivores produce protein faster than carnivores B) a pound of carnivore protein has more food value than a pound of herbivore protein C) the impact of people on plant resources would be much less if they substituted chicken for tuna in their diets D) carnivores' diets consist of more plants than meat E) chickens are a cheaper source of food than tuna

man, this one is crazy. Took me arnd 15 minutes to understand, but I am still not sure whether I understand it or got a concrete answer
D??
1) herbivores eat plants --> plant factor
2) carnivores eat herbivores, inturn, (carnivores) eaten by carnivores --> exponential plant factor :D

Re: CR: Carnivores vs herbivores [#permalink]

This one is really weird.
Like dj I am not sure whether I got the Q correct.
However I would go for A
My guess is the metabolism to produce protein is not the same for herbs and carns. Carns need to intake much more food in qty to produce the same amt of protein as herbs. Hence herbs produce proteins faster than carns ...

Nice explanation, srijay!
Here’s how to get there by way of the POE.
B is an unsubstantiated claim.
C is wrong because chickens are hardly representative of all herbivores.
D – ultimately, carnivores eat meat when they gobble up herbivores and/or other carnivores, so D is out.
E is out of scope.
We are left with A.

IMO (A) is best. (Nice explanation srijay, though I also reached to conclusion using POE)

Well I am not sure if I understood Choice B or not. Are they talking about the value of food. If the carnis hog more they are eating more money to produce same pound of protein. Going through the flow of argument I think B can logically end it. A may not be true since herbis may eat and then wait for some time to produce proteins.
I don't know but POE brought me to B.

sorry guys, I made an error in typing the question line. I corrected it but the question seems the same to me; very tough. Should I divulge the answer now?
Instead of
Quote: This argument is best completed faster than carnivores? It now reads Quote: This argument is best completed by which of the following?

OA is C. Feel free to discuss how C can be it because there is no explanation given. I'll try to analyze this one a bit later because I'm still concerned with another question right now.

I kinda toyed with the idea that C could be a possible answer but frankly I don’t see how chickens can be representative of all herbivores and how their impact on plant resources is that serious (I’m not comfortable with “much less.â€
