I too think it is A.

In the planted category US yield per acre is higher. On the overall, if you see, US yied per acre is lower than that of USSR. These can be the reasons:

1. Per acre yield of fallow land in USSR is atleast as much as that in US
2. Per acre yield of fallow land is less than per acre yield of planted land. That is why with increased addition of fallow land, the yield per acre is coming down in US.
3. Proportionately, in US more of such fallow land is getting added to planted land than in USSR.

We cannot be sure of absolute number of acres. But proportionately more acres of fallow land is there in the US among the whole agricultural land, than in USSR. Hence A.

The passage is referring to yields per acre, not total yields. E is a common statistical trap.

A

Average for planted yield is higher in the united states, but the total average yield for Russia is higher. For this to be possible, the proportion of fallow lands in Russia need to be much less than in the US.

 Also with such a huge chunk of land under ice round the year, Russia needs to utilize every bit of land available for agriculture, right?

Mistyped the answer choice.

Uhm, when your mind is numb but still do you have to pick an answer choice ...it's suggested by a CR bible book that: if the argument contains percentage, those answer choices containing absolute number are most likely to be wrong ...and vice versa ...
