I worked very hard over the last year for GMAT. Unfortunately I was barely able to cross the 600+ mark. The results were dismal compared to the labour that I had put in. This has shattered my confidence. However, I have picked myself up and plan to give it another try this year. I need some sure-success mantra.

Keep it up and don't get discouraged.
Many people around here had a hard time getting a great score the first time around, many had to take it a few times to finally find a way to crack the test - it is different for everyone. I would say the elements that clearly standout across the board are discipline about studying, keeping an error log, and motivation to get into an MBA program that is able to drive through any wall or barrier.

As you are starting your prep, take a look at some of the books below my post. They may be a good place to start.
P.S. Don't rush into taking tests, but also don't be shy about taking tests when you are a month away from your test.
