Went for E. I think the line misplaced...it should start from "if" not "and"... parallel structure. ": that there are ~, and that ~" So, A, B, and C is out. In D, "if recognized and applied..." it's passive voice, not appropriate for the subject of "students".

Construction needs "that" for parallelism. so between D & E.

"that if recognized" in D seems ambiguous. I will go with "E" (though I don't like "they" in E)

E for me as well. E maintains ||ism by using THAT and it clearly mentions that students are going to recognize and apply. In D, "if applied" clause seems to be ambiguous.

Hi everybody,

The original sentence contains two errors:I) Parallelism & II) modifier.

I) Critical-thinking instruction is predicted on two assumptions: that there are clearly identifiable thinking skills that students can be taught to recognize and apply appropriately, and (That required) if recognized and applied, students will become more effective thinkers.

II) Critical-thinking instruction is predicted on two assumptions: that there are clearly identifiable thinking skills that students can be taught to recognize and apply appropriately, and if recognized and applied, students will become more effective thinkers. - implies students are recognized and applied.

B. if these skills are recognized and applied, that students - out due to error I C. if students recognize and apply them, that they- out due to error I D. that if recognized and applied, students - out due to error II E. that if students recognize and apply these skills, they

My understanding of pronouns in then clause of "If then construction" is: the pronoun always refer to the subject of if clause. In this case, subject is "students" so "they" refers to "students".

To have parallel structure, we need 'that' A, B C are out 'If recognized and applied' incorrectly modifies 'students'

E is the answer

the correct sentence is- Critical-thinking instruction is predicted on two assumptions: that there are clearly identifiable thinking skills that students can be taught to recognize and apply appropriately, and that if students recognize and apply these skills, they will become more effective thinkers. Analysis 1

If we are paralleling with "THAT" which is highlighted in non underlined portion. Then it means quite illogical.

If we look at 2nd part of the assumptions we have "these skills". but sentence prior to it. Critical-thinking instruction is predicted on two assumptions: that if students recognize and applythese skills, they will become more effective thinkers.

I hope we must be trying to make it parallel with 2nd "That"

Here is how I solved

Testing: 1) Parallelism 2)structure

Step 1) Identify what needs to be parallel. We have two ideas so we need THAT x and THAT Y --> eliminate A/B/C

Step 2) If, Then construction is fine

Step 3) Notice in D -> recognized and applied --> What is recognized and applied? The students? Eliminate D

Arrive at E
