Currently people in the United States eat, on the average, 1,431 pounds of food per year, 35 pounds more than in 1980. This increase is, at least in part, because people between the ages of 15 and 64 have accounted for an increasing share of the population.
Which of the following can be properly inferred from the passage above?
(A) More than half of the current population of the United States is between the ages of 15 and 64. (B) The population has risen since 1980. (C) Children below the age of 15 require, on the average, more food than do people over the age of 64. (D) Before 1980 children below the age of 15 outnumbered people between the ages of 15 and 64. (E) Individuals between the ages of 15 and 64 consume, on the average, more food than do those younger or older.
what do you think about this answer? Attach your Explanation pls. Ans: E

what do you think about this answer? Attach your Explanation pls. Ans: E tip: eliminate any answer choice that brings in new info for "infer" type of question. A - " More than half" - the argument doesn't specify this anywhere. B - This strengthens the argument but cannot be inferred. C - New info that is not supported by argument. Eliminate. D - No info about Before 1980 is given. E - yes, The last statement mentions this. Please do not post the OA until you get a few responses.

(E) Individuals between the ages of 15 and 64 consume, on the average, more food than do those younger or older. (A) We know the 15-64 demographic increased, but don't know by how much, so can't conclude a specific percentage. (B) Don't know this from given info either, it could mean that the population just got older, not bigger. (C) We can infer that the 15-64 demographic consumes more food compared to people outside that demographic, but we don't know who consumes relatively more or less. (D) Can't conclude this either; the demographic might have gotten "bigger" relative to itself in 1980, but we have no idea of its size relative to other age groups. (E) Greater food consumption is attributed to a growing demographic, so we can assume people of this demographic consumes more food relative to other age groups.

This is clear E dude.....Increase of a certain type of population causes an increase in the pounds eaten....Who ate the extra pounds...It is the new population....
