Dean’s Blog Post: “Women in Business and the Role of Busines [#permalink] New post 22 Apr 2014, 12:00
FROM Darden Admissions Blog: Dean’s Blog Post: “Women in Business and the Role of Business Schools”
Following a series of events that included a meeting with business school deans at The White House and reading Sheryl Sanburg’s Lean In, Dean Bob Bruner reflected on growing gender equality in business in his recent blog post.

In discussing the opportunity for a greater representation of women in business, he writes:

“The presence of women itself is hugely transformational — on business and on the schools that train women leaders. […] Our experience at Darden shows that even modest increases in the enrollment of women can have a transformational impact on the character and culture of the educational program. Greater representation of women in classrooms, learning teams, and project groups changes the conversation: richer, more diverse, and greater respect for differences. Students (women and men) report higher levels of satisfaction with the learning experience. Faculty report better classroom and team results. And corporate recruiters report greater satisfaction with the pool of talent they encounter.”

To learn more about the challenges and opportunities he sees in growing gender equality, read his full post: “Women in Business and the Role of Business Schools.”

The 2014 i.Lab Incubator Class is the Largest Yet [#permalink] New post 28 Apr 2014, 08:00
FROM Darden Admissions Blog: The 2014 i.Lab Incubator Class is the Largest Yet
The Batten Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the Darden School of Business recently announced the ventures accepted into the 2014 W.L. Lyons Brown III Innovation Laboratory (i.Lab) incubator. The i.Lab is a University-wide initiative, housed at the Darden School, which includes an incubator supporting early-stage business ventures from U.Va. and the Charlottesville community.

The 2014 cohort is the largest in the 14-year history of the incubator program. The 26 ventures in the group, chosen from 47 applications, include 14 founded by Darden students; six started by current U.Va. students, faculty members or recent U.Va. graduates; and six created by members of the local Charlottesville community.

The i.Lab incubator provides participating ventures with a $5,000 grant, office space, mentoring support, networking opportunities with local entrepreneurs and investors, and access to legal, accounting and technological expertise. The program consists of a 10-week summer accelerator followed by a one-year residency, during which participants develop and refine their business ideas and participate in a community of fellow entrepreneurs.

The ventures in the 2014 cohort represent industries such as medicine, technology, fashion, the arts, new media and social entrepreneurship.

Among this year’s ventures:

  • K2 Dental Arts was founded by Darden Second Year students Philip Kim, Ares Manos and Dwight Emerine and helps dentists adopt the latest digital oral scanning technology for use in the manufacture of crowns and other restorations.
  • Revamp Labs was created by Darden First Year student Kris Subhash and provides digital marketing solutions for local businesses. The company’s core product is Virginia Vinehopper — a mobile app that serves as a guide to Virginia’s wineries, breweries, cideries and distilleries, and offers a mobile marketing platform for those businesses.
Among the many success stories from previous incubator classes are:

  • Green Powered Technology was founded by Darden alumnus Phillip Green (MBA `11) and recently honored as a White House Champion of Change. Green Powered Technology provides sustainable, cost-effective energy solutions to governmental, commercial and energy-impoverished clients.
  • Husk Power Systems is a venture cofounded by Darden alumni Manoj Sinha (MBA `09) and Chip Ransler (MBA `09) that provides electricity to rural India and was awarded the prestigious 2011 Ashden Award for Sustainable Energy in the International Category.  Husk Power Systems designs, installs and operates biomass-based power plants, creating a better quality, cheaper way to provide electricity to over 200,000 people in rural India.
  • hotelicopter is a global hotel search and direct connect platform founded by Darden alumni Adam Healey (MBA `05) and Charles Seilheimer (MBA `05), acquired by Room Key in 2011. The hotelicopter platform connected more than 160,000 hotels to hundreds of sites and millions of travelers.

Student Blog: Battlegrounds and Boardrooms [#permalink] New post 06 May 2014, 08:00
FROM Darden Admissions Blog: Student Blog: Battlegrounds and Boardrooms
Beginning in the spring of their First Year, Darden students can choose from a variety of global opportunities, experiential learning projects and classroom electives specific to their areas of interest. There are over 100 electives to choose from in the First and Second Year.

First Year Archana Rao writes about her experience in the elective course “Business & Leadership Lessons: The Battlefields of Gettysburg,” where she and several of her classmates traveled to Gettysburg with the U.S. Marine Corps Academy to learn lessons about leadership, teamwork and decision making by studying the history of the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War:

“I was overwhelmed with the plethora of parallels in business leadership that were waiting to be made using strategic battlefield decisions. Be it understanding ‘Key Terrain’ in a battle which directly translated to ‘competitive advantage in an industry,’ to how General Meade of the north ‘manages diversity of commanders’ character’ in his army to how a CEO ‘leverages diversity of thought and talent in an organization,’ there were inferences everywhere to be drawn.”

Read more about Archana’s experience.

I am soooo happy to report that i got admitted from R2 Waitlist. Just got the call an hour or so back.
I am an Indian applicant working in Singapore..this was kind of unexpected as I had lost hope after 2 WL and 3 Dings this year but I guess you never say never. All the best to everyone waiting on the decisions.
Oh and yes they will be informing R2 WL and R3 applicants who get admitted within this week.

Congratulations to everybody accepted in R3 and from R2 waitlist!
I was waitlisted in R2, and didn't hear back from them after R3 decisions. Does it mean that the waitlist continues?
