Re: 4men and 6 boys can finish a piece of work in 20 days while [#permalink]
18 Apr 2013, 01:00

M = rate of work of men b = rate of work of boys

(4M+6B)*20 days= 1 job (3M+4B)*28 = 1 job

80M+120B=1 84M+112B=1 so dome math...

M=\frac{1}{140} B=\frac{1}{280} those are the rate of work (each hour).

7 boys = 7*\frac{1}{128}=\frac{7}{128} each hour To complete one job 1 job = time*\frac{7}{280} now this time is \frac{280}{7} hour that is none of your answers If the question were about men 7 men = 7*\frac{1}{140}=\frac{7}{140} To complete one job 1 job = time*\frac{7}{140} now this time is \frac{140}{7} = 20 A _________________

IMO C lets put that in equation. No. of students in one row=x No. of rows=y Total students=xy. 1st equation: (x+1)(y-2)=xy i.e. xy-2x+y-2 =xy i.e. -2x+y=2 2nd Equation (x-1)(y+3)=xy i.e. xy+3x-y-3 =xy i.e. 3x-y=3

adding 1st and second equation we get x=5 putting x=5 in any of the equation we get y=12

so total number of Students should be xy = 5*12 = 60

Think of the students standing in a matrix of rows and columns.

There are r rows and c columns. So there are a total of rc students.

Algebra approach:

Now if there is 1 student extra in each row i.e. there is one column extra, no of rows will be r-2 rows. If there is 1 student less in each row, i.e. there is one column less, no of rows will be r+3 rows.

(r - 2)(c + 1) = rc (r + 3)(c - 1) = rc

r - 2c = 2 -r + 3c = 3

c = 5 r = 12

Total number of students = 5*12 = 60 _________________
