Dear ALL,
Here I?m posting several controversial, IMO, questions that are taken from ?1000 real GMAT SC questions?:

1. According to Henry David Thoreau, @the reason a majority is allowed to rule is not that it is more likely to be right, but because it is stronger.@
(A) the reason why a majority is allowed to rule is not that it is more likely to be right, but because it is stronger
(B) a majority is allowed to rule not because it is more likely to be right, but because it is stronger
(C) the reason for majority rule is not because they are more likely to be right, they are stronger
(D) the majority is allowed to rule because of its strength, not because it is more likely to be right
(E) the reason a majority is allowed to rule is not that it is more likely to be right, but because it is stronger

OA ? B
I can?t find mistake in (A) and (E).
Please, don?t write that other variants contain ambiguity. I have encountered many much more ambivalent sentences on the TEST, yet to be considered correct.

Thank you

Dilshod, I did in fact choose B, before I read your answer.

Let me explain why B is better than A and E

A uses redundant words - "reason why" the word "reason" itself would suffice, so A is out.

Choice E is not parallel. Besides I feel that "not that it is" is not idiomatically correct.

Also look at B, it sets up the parallel phrases very nicely - "not because it is... but because it is"

Also remember, when in doubt, choose the shorter answer choice.
