Declining after accepting the offer [#permalink]
12 Mar 2011, 10:58
Hi All, I am little confused and would appreciate help of the club members. I got a admit call from X school and have to submit the deposit in a week time. But I am still waiting for a decision from another 2 schools. And I dont know whether the final result would be out in another week for those two schools. So here is my question: If I submit my deposit in School X, is it possible to accept offer from another school? I understand that I stand to lose my deposit amount at school X, but is it ok to go for other school?
Any suggestions??

Deciding to attend another school after putting down a deposit at one school is fine. Schools understand that this is going to happen with several students each year, and this is one of the reasons why they have the wait list.
If you decide to go somewhere else after putting down your deposit, you should notify the first school as soon as you know that you're not going to be matriculating there in the fall. The admissions office probably won't be very happy about it, but they'll appreciate you reaching out to them.

Has any one postponed their decision dates?? binding? indentured servitude is illegal in the US It is similar to walking away from buying a house if you are the buyer and you already paid your deposit. you lose the deposit, but otherwise you just move on.

Walking away is fine after the deposit, but make sure you notify the school. After you make the desposit, school will assume you are attending until you don't show up for the orientation. This really mess up the class size and you are taking away a slot that would have gone to someone else. As a note on the binding. If you applied Early Action and renege on your decision, this is generally considered unethical.
