Definition of current supervisor [#permalink]

This might seem like a stupid topic, but I'm asking myself questions about my reco letters, and more particularly about the one from my "current supervisor".
I work in IB; my "administrative" supervisor is an executive director. I fill in my yearly evaluation and objectives with him (he consults the whole team for that to get a better view). However, on the field, although he is aware of what I'm doing, I report mainly to middle management such as directors. One of my reco letters comes from one of these directors, since I have often worked with him.
So basically my question is: is the definition of current supervisor very strict? Does it ABSOLUTELY have to be my "administrative" supervisor? Or can it be somebody else higher ranked than me from the same department, who I report to for some projects (not all of them), who knows me well but who isn't my "official" supervisor?
I'm probably stressing out for nothing, but I would like to have your opinion.

No, it does not have to be your admin supervisor. But depending on the school, they may want you to explain why you made this choice in recommenders, possibly in an optional essay.

I understand a definition of a current supervisor as of a person to whom you directly report to - your "administrative" supervisor. And, basing on it, added an explanation why one of my recommenders was from executives but not my administrative boss.
